1957 — 2026
1957 – 1975
The shot heard around the solar system. A polished sphere beeping from orbit stunned the world and launched the Space Age.
Launched October 4, 1957. Orbited Earth every 96.2 minutes. Its radio signal could be picked up by amateur operators worldwide. Burned up on re-entry January 4, 1958, after 1,440 orbits. Triggered the "Sputnik Crisis" and led to the creation of NASA and DARPA.
First animal in orbit — but a one-way trip. The stray dog Laika survived launch and weightlessness, but died from overheating within hours.
Laika, a stray from the streets of Moscow, became the first animal to orbit Earth on November 3, 1957. Soviet officials claimed for decades she survived several days; declassified records revealed she died within 5–7 hours from overheating and stress. No re-entry was ever planned.
America answers. First US satellite discovers the Van Allen radiation belts — science, not just spectacle.
Launched January 31, 1958. Designed by Wernher von Braun's team at JPL. Weighed just 13.97 kg. NASA was created later that year, July 29, 1958.
First human-made object to reach another celestial body. Luna 2 impacted the Moon on September 13, 1959 (21:02 UTC), confirming it had no significant magnetic field.
First photographs of the Moon's far side — a landscape never seen by human eyes.
The grainy but historic images revealed a surface markedly different from the near side, with fewer maria.
A catastrophe hidden for decades. An R-16 ICBM exploded during rushed testing at Baikonur, killing Marshal Nedelin and 92+ others.
The Soviet government covered up the disaster for decades. One of the deadliest space-related accidents in history, caused by pressure to meet political deadlines.
Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human in space. One orbit, 108 minutes, and Earth is forever changed. The flight made Gagarin a global hero — and the man Kennedy's America had to beat.
On April 12, 1961, Gagarin completed one orbit of Earth in 108 minutes. He ejected at 7 km altitude and parachuted to the ground separately from the capsule — a fact the Soviets concealed for years. He famously said: "I see Earth! It is so beautiful!"
Alan Shepard: first American in space. A 15-minute suborbital flight that lit the fuse for Apollo.
May 5, 1961. Suborbital flight lasting 15 minutes 28 seconds. Three weeks later, JFK declared the goal of landing on the Moon before the decade's end.
"We choose to go to the Moon." Kennedy declared America would land a man on the Moon before the decade's end — the audacious goal that defined the Space Race.
May 25, 1961. Three weeks after Shepard's flight. The speech galvanized NASA, secured massive funding, and set the ultimate finish line. The budget would peak at 4.4% of federal spending.
First woman in space. She orbited Earth 48 times over nearly three days.
Valentina Tereshkova launched June 16, 1963. It would be 19 years before another woman flew to space. And 20 years before an American woman, Sally Ride, reached orbit.
First spacewalk. Leonov floated outside for 12 minutes — then nearly died. His suit ballooned so badly he had to bleed air to squeeze back inside.
The re-entry system also failed, landing them in a remote Siberian forest. They spent the night surrounded by wolves before rescue arrived.
The secret architect of Soviet space dies. Sergei Korolev — known to the West only as 'the Chief Designer' — died during surgery at 59. His loss left a void that crippled the Soviet program.
Korolev was the driving force behind Sputnik, Vostok, and the N1 Moon rocket. Without him, the Soviet space effort fractured into competing design bureaus.
Grissom, White, and Chaffee killed in a launchpad fire. A spark in pure oxygen. The tragedy that almost ended Apollo — and the redesign that ultimately saved it.
January 27, 1967. An electrical spark ignited the pure oxygen atmosphere during a routine test. The complete spacecraft redesign that followed made Apollo safer and ultimately enabled the Moon landing.
First spaceflight death. Vladimir Komarov launched knowing Soyuz 1 had over 200 faults. His main parachute failed. He is the first person to die during spaceflight.
Komarov reportedly knew the risks but flew to spare his backup pilot — his friend Yuri Gagarin. The capsule slammed into the ground at high speed.
First humans orbit the Moon. One of the boldest decisions in space history — they changed the flight plan to beat a rumored Soviet flyby.
December 21, 1968. Borman, Lovell, Anders. First to leave Earth orbit, first to see the far side with human eyes. Their Christmas Eve Genesis reading was broadcast to the largest TV audience in history. Anders took the famous Earthrise photo.
The finish line. 600 million people watched live. "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Armstrong and Aldrin walk on the Moon.
July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon while Michael Collins orbited above. The Eagle landed with 25 seconds of fuel remaining. 600 million people watched live. They spent 2 hours 31 minutes on the surface.
"Houston, we've had a problem." An oxygen tank explosion crippled the spacecraft en route to the Moon. The crew used the Lunar Module as a lifeboat.
April 11, 1970. Ground controllers and crew improvised CO₂ scrubbers from duct tape and cardboard. NASA called it their 'finest hour.' All three astronauts returned alive.
China's first satellite. Broadcasting "The East Is Red" — a thin thread enters the race.
Launched April 24, 1970. Made China the fifth nation to independently launch a satellite. 173 kg, broadcast the patriotic song for 20 days.
Three cosmonauts found dead after landing. A faulty valve opened during re-entry separation, depressurizing the cabin. Dobrovolsky, Patsayev, and Volkov — the only humans to have died in space itself.
June 29, 1971. They had just completed a 23-day stay aboard Salyut 1, setting an endurance record. The recovery team opened the hatch to find all three motionless in their couches.
Cernan's last words on the surface: "We leave as we came and, God willing, as we shall return." It would be over 50 years before anyone returned. Gene Cernan — last to walk on the Moon.
December 7, 1972. Commander Cernan and Harrison Schmitt (the only scientist to walk on the Moon) spent over 3 days on the surface. It would be over 50 years before humans returned to the Moon.
The first international crewed spaceflight. Americans and Soviets dock in orbit — a handshake in space.
July 17, 1975. Tom Stafford and Alexei Leonov shook hands through the hatch. Proved international cooperation in space was possible. Laid groundwork for the ISS decades later.
1976 – 1997
India joins the spacefaring nations. Led by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who later became India's president.
July 18, 1980. India's SLV-3 successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit, making India the seventh nation to achieve independent orbital launch capability.
Columbia launches. The reusable spacecraft promises routine access to orbit.
April 12, 1981 (exactly 20 years after Gagarin). The Shuttle program would fly 135 missions over 30 years. Two lost: Challenger (1986) and Columbia (2003), killing 14 astronauts total.
The modular marvel. Mir hosted crews for 15 years — proving humans could live in space long-term.
Launched Feb 20, 1986. Continuously occupied 1989-1999. Polyakov spent a record 437 days aboard. Deorbited March 23, 2001.
ESA's first deep-space mission. Europe stakes its claim among the stars.
Flew within 596 km of Halley's Comet on March 13, 1986, returning the first close-up images of a comet nucleus. Established ESA as a major player in planetary science.
Humanity's eye in the sky. After a flawed mirror was fixed, Hubble rewrote our understanding of the cosmos.
Launched April 24, 1990. Determined the age of the universe, proved supermassive black holes exist, discovered accelerating expansion of the universe.
1998 – 2010
15 nations build a house in the sky. Continuously occupied since Nov 2, 2000 — the longest human presence in space.
First module Zarya launched Nov 20, 1998. At 109m × 73m, visible to the naked eye. Over 270 people from 20 countries have visited. A triumph of cooperation — and a reason nobody went back to the Moon.
China's first taikonaut. Third nation to independently send a human to space.
October 15, 2003. Yang Liwei orbited Earth 14 times over 21 hours. China became only the third nation (after USSR/Russia and the USA) to independently achieve crewed spaceflight.
Twin rovers on Mars. Designed for 90 days. Opportunity lasted 15 years, drove 45 km.
Landed January 2004. Found definitive evidence that liquid water once flowed on the Martian surface. Opportunity: the longest Mars surface mission ever.
China's first lunar probe. A methodical march toward the Moon begins.
Entered lunar orbit Nov 5, 2007. Mapped the Moon's surface in 3D. Named after the Chinese Moon goddess. Start of a systematic lunar program: orbit, land, rove, sample return.
India discovers water on the Moon — for $79 million. Less than the budget of the movie "Gravity."
Launched October 22, 2008. Its Moon Mineralogy Mapper (a NASA instrument) detected water molecules on the Moon's surface. India became the fourth nation to reach the Moon.
2011 – 2021
Congress bans NASA from bilateral cooperation with China. The legislative firewall that shapes the modern space race.
Named after Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA). Prohibits NASA from using government funds for any bilateral cooperation with China. Bars China from the ISS. Critics: accelerated China's space independence. Supporters: protects US tech. Still in effect.
First commercial spacecraft to dock with the ISS. The era of private spaceflight begins.
May 25, 2012. Dragon delivered 460 kg of cargo. Validated NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services (COTS) program. SpaceX would make Falcon 9 the most-launched orbital rocket in history.
India reaches Mars on its first try. $74 million — cheaper than the movie "Gravity."
Launched Nov 5, 2013. Entered Mars orbit September 24, 2014. First Asian nation to reach Mars. First nation ever to succeed on its first attempt.
China lands on the Moon. First soft landing since 1976. The Jade Rabbit explores Mare Imbrium.
Dec 14, 2013. China became the third nation to soft-land on the Moon (after the US and USSR). First soft lunar landing in 37 years.
First spacecraft to orbit and land on a comet. 10 years, 6.4 billion km, 310 million km from Earth.
Philae landed on 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko Nov 12, 2014. Bounced twice in 1/6 gravity, landed on its side in shadow. Battery lasted 60 hours. Changed our understanding of comets.
First flyby of Pluto. After 9 years and 5 billion km, we finally saw the dwarf planet clearly.
Closest approach July 14, 2015. Revealed a surprisingly complex world with mountains of water ice, nitrogen glaciers, and a heart-shaped plain. Continued into the Kuiper Belt.
SpaceX lands a triple rocket. Starman in a Tesla roadster heads for the asteroid belt.
February 6, 2018. Two boosters landed in synchronized formation. The most powerful operational rocket, at 1/10th the cost of competitors. Changed the economics of space.
First landing on the Moon's far side. The dark side, now lit by human technology.
January 3, 2019. Landed in Von Kármán crater, deployed Yutu-2 rover. Used Queqiao relay satellite to communicate with Earth. First nation to achieve this milestone.
First crewed launch from US soil since 2011. Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley ride a Dragon to the ISS.
May 30, 2020. Launch America restored US crewed launch capability. First commercial human spaceflight program. Demo mission validated Crew Dragon for regular flights.
China reaches Mars in one go: orbiter, lander, and rover. Third nation to soft-land on the Red Planet.
Entered Mars orbit Feb 2021, landed May 14, 2021. Zhurong rover explored Utopia Planitia for over a year. China achieved in first attempt what took NASA multiple missions.
First powered flight on another planet. A 1.8 kg drone flies in Mars's thin atmosphere.
April 19, 2021. First of 72+ flights over 3 years. Proved aerial exploration is possible on Mars. Originally planned for 5 flights, far exceeded all expectations.
2021 – 2026
First all-civilian orbital mission. Four ordinary people orbit Earth for three days in a Dragon capsule.
September 15, 2021. Funded by billionaire Jared Isaacman. Raised $243M for St. Jude. Proved space is opening beyond government astronauts.
Most powerful rocket since Saturn V. NASA returns to deep space, uncrewed Orion orbits the Moon.
November 16, 2022. 25-day mission proved the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft. Flew 1.4 million miles, furthest any spacecraft built for humans has traveled.
Successor to Hubble sees in infrared. Deeper, further, older — light from the first galaxies.
Fully operational July 2022. Sees 13.5 billion years back, just after the Big Bang. Revolutionary images of exoplanets, nebulae, and galaxy formation.
Largest rocket ever built attempts orbital flight. The vehicle designed to make humanity multiplanetary.
April 20, 2023. Exploded 4 minutes in, but proved the launch mount and ground systems. Rapid iterative development continues. Designed for 100 tons to orbit, fully reusable.
India lands near the Moon's south pole — a first for any nation. Vikram and Pragyan explore lunar secrets.
August 23, 2023. Fourth nation to land on Moon, first near south pole where ice may exist in permanently shadowed craters. 14-day mission proved Indian deep-space capability.
First commercial spacewalk. SpaceX crew exits Dragon capsule 700 km up — higher than ISS, higher than Hubble.
September 2024. Jared Isaacman and Sarah Gillis became first non-government spacewalkers. Tested new spacesuits for future Mars missions. Farthest from Earth since 1972.
Bezos enters the heavy-lift race. Seven-meter fairing, reusable booster, and a path to the Moon.
First flight January 2025. Named after John Glenn. Competes with SpaceX for national security and science launches. Heavy-lift capability for lunar landers and space stations.
First crewed mission to the Moon in 50 years. Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, Jeremy Hansen orbit Earth's companion.
Scheduled April 2026. 10-day mission: free-return trajectory around Moon. First woman, first person of color, first Canadian on a lunar mission. Prelude to Artemis III landing.
